Our Top Tips of the Month
Native Plant of the Month:
Pokeweed
Phytolacca americana is easily recognized by its shiny purple-black berry clusters that appear in late summer. These berries were historically used as a dye for fabrics and made into ink. All parts of this plant are poisonous to humans and livestock, but especially its big taproot. Reaching 10ft tall and 5ft wide in the growing season, deer love to browse this plant and many birds enjoy the berries.
Horticulture Tip of the Month:
Late Summer Fungal Diseases
Approximately 85% of all plant diseases are caused by fungi. Proper identification and management are key to keeping these diseases from spreading in your yard. In Virginia, we commonly see anthracnose, powdery mildew, and various types of leaf spot this time of year. Prune to improve air circulation and remove infected leaves and debris, disposing of them in a garbage can and not in your compost! Herbaceous perennials prone to powdery mildew, such as peonies and bee balm, should be cut back to the ground in the fall - not spring!
Invasive Plant of the Month:
Japanese Knotweed
Reynoutria japonica was originally introduced to the United States in the 1800’s from East Asia, touted as a great plant for erosion control. Currently in bloom, these herbaceous perennials can grow 10-15 ft tall forming dense stands that crowd out native vegetation. The root system of this plant makes it extremely difficult to eradicate - running 6ft deep and up to 65ft wide, it can severely damage roads and foundations. It may take years to eradicate, and it is important to prevent the spread of plant fragments with manual removal, as any small piece of root or stem can sprout a new plant.
